Why should I consider buying a Symonds Saddle?

Whilst there are many saddles on the market today, lots are from a ‘production line’, where several workers make a specific part of the saddle, for example, cutters and stitchers, etc. If you decide to purchase a Symonds saddle, you will have a truly bespoke, traditional hand-made saddle. From selecting the leather, right through to attaching the saddle keyring when it is finished, every saddle is made only by Ray Symonds.

Do your saddles have adjustable trees?

No, I do not use adjustable head plate trees in any of my saddles. All Symonds saddles are adjustable by one fit, and any fine adjustments can be done by adding or removing flocking. Whilst adjustable head plate saddles suit some equines, they do not take into account the entire saddle fit, which may potentially lead to problems.

What type of horses do your saddles fit?
My saddles fit a wide range of equines, from children’s ponies, and finer thoroughbreds to heavy-weight cobs. Whatever the profile or fit, I will have a saddle to suit.
Do you offer part exchange?
As a saddlemaker, I cannot offer part exchange. However, please do ask your fitter or stockist, as some may take your old saddle against a new Symonds saddle. If you do have an older Symonds saddle you wish to sell, there are various saddle-selling sites and tack shops that may sell it on a commission basis on your behalf.
Do you sell second hand or ex-demo saddles?
I do not sell second-hand saddles, as I only make new ones. However, some of my fitters and stockists may have second-hand or ex-demo Symonds for sale.
What width fittings and seat sizes do your saddles come in?
Symonds saddles range from 15” for a pony saddle, up to 18.5”. If needed, a 19” saddle can be made, but this would be a special-order tree. I also cater to a wide range of width fittings, from narrow to extremely wide.
What if I need a saddle that is not a standard size?
I work very closely with fitters to ensure the saddle is right for both horse and rider. This may mean, for example, shorter panels, deeper gussets, or longer flaps are needed. In some cases, it will entail cutting a completely new set of patterns for your saddle.
What do you use to flock your saddles?
All Symonds saddles are flocked with Jacob’s wool. The only exception to this are saddles with close contact panels, which are hand moulded using various types of rubber.
Are your saddles made to last?
Absolutely! I regularly see second-hand Symonds saddles pop up for sale on various sites that are 15, 20+ years old – and they look a fraction of that age!
I have just bought a second-hand Symonds saddle - can you tell me how old it is?
Yes, I can. On the near side sweat flap, in the bottom right-hand corner, is the Symonds horseshoe and numbers stamped above it. Just send a photograph of this stamp or email the numbers and I can give you the date I made your saddle. However, this only applies to saddles up to 25 years old, as my early saddles did not have a date stamp. If in doubt, please send through a photograph of your saddle and I will give you as much information on it as possible.
